Les Claypool dives into solo trek
Eccentric rocker Les Claypool is in the midst of solo tour that will see him play clubs, theaters and festivals all over the US through mid-August.
The Primus frontman/bassist's plans include two performances at the July 7-8High Sierra Music Festival in Quincy, CA, and an Aug. 11 finale at Bridgeport, CT's Gathering of the Vibes. Indie-rock duo Two Gallants will open for Claypool on all non-festival stops, which dominate the schedule. The full itinerary is listed below.
Claypool continues to support his latest solo album, last year's "Of Whales and Woe," his first studio collection released under his own name. He also recently released the "Fancy" DVD, which captures last year's solo tour from a fan's perspective. The film was assembled using footage shot by a small group of fans over the course of several performances, according to Claypool's website.
Meanwhile, the quirky performer has branched out into other forms of media, releasing his debut novel, "South of the Pumphouse," and writing, directing and starring in the mockumentary-style feature film "Electric Apricot: The Quest for Festeroo."
On the Primus front, there is talk of a new record in the works. The reunited band toured last year behind its best-of CD, "They Can't All Be Zingers," and the "Blame It on the Fish" DVD, which is described as "an abstract look at the 2003 Primus Tour de Fromage."
In addition to his most famous band, Claypool has headed up a slew of side projects over the past 16 years, including Sausage, Holy Mackerel, Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains, The Fearless Flying Frog Brigade, and Oysterhead.
