James Taylor books late summer jaunt
With a tour of the UK now in the books, quintessential singer/songwriter James Taylor is beginning to line up some American dates.
So far, the five-time Grammy winner has a handful of August shows scheduled on the East Coast, including the Aug. 11 East Hampton Social in New York, which offers fans a VIP experience for a whopping $15,000 per person. More dates are expected, according to a popular Taylor fan website. Confirmed gigs are listed below.
Taylor's most recent studio set, "James Taylor at Christmas," was released last year as a revised version of 2004's limited edition "James Taylor: A Christmas Album," which was sold exclusively at Hallmark stores. His latest collection of all-new, non-holiday material is 2002's "October Road," which spawned the Grammy-winning song "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight."
The unpretentious superstar, who celebrated his 59th birthday in March, has told various publications that he is working on his next album, but has made no promises as to when it will be finished. In the meantime, Taylor can be heard on "Tribute to Joni Mitchell," a set that was released in April.
During a career that spans five decades and boasts sales of 40 million albums, Taylor has earned 40 gold, platinum and multi-platinum awards for records starting with 1970's "Sweet Baby James," according to a bio posted at his website. His first greatest-hits album from the mid-'70s has earned the Recording Industry Association's Diamond Award for sales in excess of 10 million units in the US.
Taylor was inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriter's Hall of Fame in 2000. Last year, the Grammy organization honored the performer as its MusiCares Person of the Year for his music achievements and philanthropic commitment to arts, environmental and humanitarian causes.
