String Cheese Incident lengthens farewell tour

Veteran jam band The String Cheese Incident has added a few new shows this summer, including an outdoor festival in Minnesota, as the group draws closer to its planned retirement.

The band's July 20 headlining slot at the 10,000 Lakes Festival in Detroit Lakes, MN, highlights the new additions to its schedule. The group has also added new shows to its multi-day residencies New York and Morrison, CO.

The trek will kick off June 15 with a slot at the Bonnaroo festival in Manchester, TN. All of the group's current remaining dates are listed below.

The 14-year-old band will call it quits at the end of the summer tour season, a move that follows last November's announcement that guitarist and principal member Billy Nershi would be leaving "to pursue other musical projects," according to the band's website.

"Presently, there are no plans for The String Cheese Incident beyond summer of 2007," the group recently wrote in a message posted at its website. "The band would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our friends and fans for all your support."

The group will also participate in one final version of its "Big Summer Classic," a single-location version of a traveling festival the band helped create in 2005. This year's edition will run Aug. 3-5 in Salem, MO, and will feature performances from Los Lobos, The Wailers, Yonder Mountain String Band and many others. More information can be found at the event's website.

The String Cheese Incident formed in Crested Butte, CO, in 1993, at which time the group played local gigs at ski resorts in exchange for free lift tickets. In addition to Nershi (guitars), the band's lineup features Michael Kang (mandolin, violin), Michael Travis (drums, percussion), Kyle Hollingsworth (keys), Keith Moseley (bass) and Jason Hann (percussion).

The group issued all of its albums on its own SCI Fidelity label, beginning with 1996's "Born on the Wrong Planet." Its most recent studio set is last year's "One Step Closer."
