Briefly: Willie Nelson, PBS 'Soundstage,' Jam Cruise, Bad Religion
Willie Nelson 's annual 4th of July Picnic--which traditionally takes place in the country legend's home state of Texas--will relocate to Washington state this summer.
Nelson has booked the show at the Gorge Amphitheatre in George, WA, and will headline a bill that also includes Son Volt, Old 97's, Drive By Truckers and Amos Lee.
A ticket pre-sale is underway for members of Nelson's fan club; details are posted at his official website. Tickets go on sale to the general public Saturday (5/12).
Rob Thomas , Macy Gray , Jewel and Dashboard Confessional comprise the first batch of acts who'll be featured during the fifth season of PBS's music series, "Soundstage."
The season launches with the June 14 airing of Thomas' performance, while Gray's set will air July 5; Dashboard Confessional's July 12; and Jewel's July 19, according to a press release. Performances by additional artists are also in the works.
This year's Jam Cruise excursion is scheduled to feature Warren Haynes, Michael Franti & Spearhead, funky METERS (featuring Art Neville, George Porter, Russell Batiste & Ian Neville), Yonder Mountain String Band, Galactic, Dark Star Orchestra, Soulive, Toots & the Maytals, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Everyone Orchestra (conducted by Matt Butler and featuring Jon Fishman, Steve Kimock & Jeff Coffin), Perpetual Groove, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Lotus, New Monsoon, Toubab Krewe, The Motet, DJ Harry andKarl Denson. The ocean-faring event, which marks the sixth such outing, will depart Jan. 4 from Ft. Lauderdale for a five-day/five-night trip that will make stops in various tropical ports. Details are available at the Jam Cruise website.
Punk veterans Bad Religion will usher their forthcoming album, "New Maps of Hell," with the leadoff single "Honest Goodbye." The group plans to release the cut June 12 as a digital single that will be available via all major download services, according to a press release.
The track, which founding band members Brett Gurewitz and Greg Graffin co-wrote, is inspired by the life and crimes of Perry Smith, the murderer made famous by author Truman Capote's classic novel "In Cold Blood."
"The song questions how a man with seemingly gentle and artistic sensibilities comes to commit brutally heinous crimes," Gurewitz said in a statement. "It's an emotional song to me that delves into the humanity of forgiveness and retribution."
