Jimmy Buffett surprises Berkshire shareholders
It may not have been the Buffett they were expecting, but those who attended Berkshire Hathaway's annual shareholder meeting last weekend probably didn't complain too much when Jimmy Buffett opened the festivities.
The chief Parrothead joked that, as Warren Buffett's distant cousin, he was taking over for the 76-year-old billionaire chairman, according to the Associated Press.
"Since blood is thicker than water, I'm your new chairman," the singer reportedly quipped. He went on to sing a version of "Margaritaville" that was rewritten to honor Berkshire Hathaway and its companies.
After the song, the performer reportedly introduced the Buffett the crowd was really waiting for.
Buffett, the singer, had time to joke around with the shareholders between gigs on his current US tour of stadiums, arenas and amphitheaters. He will resume the outing June 23 in Pittsburgh, PA, and has also added a new date since last check: June 30 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
But first, Buffett will join Lenny Kravitz, Derek Trucks and the Wynton Marsalis Septet for a May 14 benefit concert in New York City to raise money for the non-profit Jazz at Lincoln Center. Tickets start at $1,000. Dates are listed below.
Last month saw the release of "Live at Texas Stadium," which captures Buffett's May 2004 concert with Alan Jackson and George Strait at the Dallas venue. Buffett released his latest studio album, "Take the Weather With You," in October. That followed 2004's "License to Chill," a collection of country/pop duets that earned the singer/songwriter his first No. 1 record.
