Chris Tomlin top Dove Award winner for second straight year
Singer/songwriter Chris Tomlin took home the most trophies for the second year in a row as gospel music's biggest prizes, the GMA Dove Awards , were handed out Wednesday night (4/25).
The Texas-born performer, who nabbed five prizes last year, returned to haul away six more at this year's 38th edition of the award presentation, including Artist of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year. Tomlin's current studio album, "Passion: Everything Glorious," took awards for both Pop/Contemporary Album of the Year and Praise & Worship Album of the Year.
Newcomer Aaron Shust won three Dove Awards, including Songwriter of the Year and New Artist of the Year. Shust also took Song of the Year honors for "My Savior, My God."
"Chris Tomlin and Aaron Shust deserve their moment to rejoice in the recognition their community has bestowed on them with their multiple Dove Awards, and it is evident they will be impacting gospel and Christian music for some time to come," said John W. Styll, president and CEO of the Gospel Music Association, which presents the awards.
Overall, more than 30 performing artists were presented with awards, including Alan Jackson , Jars of Clay , Amy Grant, Andrae Crouch and Kirk Franklin. The complete list of winners is available at the event's official website.
According to a press release from the organization, the Gospel Music Association is "dedicated to exposing, promoting and celebrating the gospel through music of all styles including pop, rock, praise & worship, black gospel, R&B, hip hop, southern gospel, country, and more."
