The Artist Says He's Prince Again

The artist formerly known by various names--including an unpronounceable symbol--will once again be known simply as Prince . Prince made the announcement during a press conference held Tuesday (5/16) in New York.

Prince, whose real name is Prince Rogers Nelson, stopped using the moniker Prince in 1993, when he was battling Warner Bros. Records over creative control issues.

"On Dec. 31, 1999, my publishing contract with Warner-Chappell expired, thus emancipating the name I was given before birth--Prince--from all long-term restrictive documents,'' the 41-year-old R&B star said. "I will now go back to using my name instead of the symbol I adopted to free myself from all undesirable relationships.''
