Briefly: Bruce Springsteen, Icons of Music, KISS's Mark St. John, Tony Bennett
Fans at a New York City Bruce Springsteen tribute/benefit concert last night (4/5) got a treat when the man being feted made a surprise appearance on stage.
According to published reports, Springsteen showed up at the Carnegie Hall event and performed "Promised Land" and "Rosalita." Other performers included Patti Smith , The Bacon Brothers, Badly Drawn Boy, Pete Yorn, North Mississippi Allstars, Juliana Hatfield and Steve Earle.
Proceeds from the show were earmarked for Music for Youth, a program that seeks to "make quality music education available to underprivileged young people," according to the MFY website.
More details have emerged for the April 21 Icons of Music auction in New York City, which will take place at the Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square. Organizers have announced that the event will include performances by the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Allen Toussaint . Tickets, which are on sale now, are priced at $1,000; the cost includes food and beverage, a collectible catalog of auction items and a VIP gift bag, according to organizers.
A portion of the proceeds will benefit Music Rising, a campaign co-founded by U2 guitarist The Edge, producer Bob Ezrin, and Gibson Guitars Chairman and CEO Henry Juszkiewicz; the group's aim is to aid Gulf Coast Region musicians affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Additional details about the auction--which will include online bidding--are available at the Julien's Auctions website.
One-time KISS guitarist Mark St. John--real name Mark Norton--died Thursday (4/5) of an apparent brain hemorrhage, according to KISS' official website. He was 51.
St. John, a member of KISS during its non-makeup years, replaced the group's second guitarist, Vinnie Vincent, and appeared on the band's 1984 album, "Animalize." As the group was preparing to launch a tour behind the release, St. John developed an arthritic condition that caused his hands and arms to swell, which prevented him from touring. He was replaced by guitarist Bruce Kulick.
"Animalize" features the hit single "Heaven's on Fire," which is the only clip from the KISS archive on which St. John was featured.
Tony Bennett has postponed his Saturday (4/7) concert in Phoenix due to a bout with the flu, according to a press release. A new date will be announced soon; tickets for the original performance will be honored on the make-up date, and refunds are available at the point of purchase, according to organizers.
