SXSW Review: Cold War Kids

Cold War Kids hardly need the help of a packed music conference to get them noticed. With a record deal already sealed with the savvy Downtown Records and the hit record "Robbers and Cowards" under their belt, these four rockers have only to continue perfecting their live show.

Their SXSW showcase Thursday night left little to be desired with the shoulder-to-shoulder crowd, however. The piano-laden pop rock of "We Used to Vacation" started the show with instant crowd recognition and participation. Lead singer/piano player Nathan Willett threw out crystal clear vocals while pounding away at his keyboard. An older tune called "Quiet Please" showcased his Jeff Buckley-like range, complete with Buckley’s characteristic emotional waver.

"Hospital Beds" and the ultra-catchy, radio-friendly "Hang Me Up to Dry" made the California group's short set list as well.
