Taylor Hicks takes his 'modern womp' on the road

Now that "American Idol" winner Taylor Hicks has released his debut album and made the talk-show rounds, the soul singer finally has set out on his first major headlining tour.

Hicks' itinerary, which has been filling up since late last year, will see the performer playing mostly in the eastern half of the US though April, with some dates in the West set for May. Details are listed below.

Since sweeping Fox TV's "American Idol" competition last May, Hicks has toured with his fellow finalists and recorded his self-titled debut, which was released in December. The album, produced by Grammy winner Matt Serletic (Rob Thomas, Matchbox Twenty), entered The Billboard 200 album chart at No. 2. It features Hicks' version of songs by Marvin Gaye, Rob Thomas and others, as well as a couple of original cuts.

Hicks describes the record--which combines soul, funk and blues--as "modern womp music." Songs from the set are streaming at Hicks' website and MySpace page.

The Birmingham, AL, native struggled for 10 years to make it in the music business before "American Idol" made him an "overnight success."
