Briefly: James Blunt, T.I., Sisters in Spirit, Michelle Shocked, Barry White
Singer/songwriter James Blunt , rapper T.I. and R&B legends Earth, Wind & Fire are the latest additions to the roster of acts slated to perform at Sunday's (2/11) 49th Grammy Awards ceremony.
Blunt and T.I. are both contending for trophies this year, with Blunt vying for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for "You're Beautiful," Best Pop Vocal Album for "Back to Bedlam," and Best New Artist; while T.I. is in the running for Best Rap Solo Performance and Best Rap Song for "What You Know," Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for "My Love" (with Justin Timberlake) and Best Rap Album for "King."
Six-time Grammy winners Earth, Wind & Fire will share the stage with previously announced artists Mary J. Blige and Ludacris during a special performance segment, according to organizers.
The 49th Grammy Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place in Los Angeles, and will air live on CBS.
Organizers are pulling the plug on the Sisters in Spirit Tour following Sunday's (2/11) engagement in Baton Rouge, LA.
"Despite the tour lineup of first-class vocalists, the ticket sales were not what we had hoped for," tour promoter Al Wash of ALW Entertainment said in a press release.
As previously reported, the Sisters in Spirit tour features 11-time Grammy-winning gospel legend Shirley Caesar, R&B/soul singer Kelly Price, neo-soul singer/songwriter Angie Stone, evangelist and gospel singer Dorinda Clark Cole, singer/songwriter/choreographer Nicole C. Mullen and singer/evangelist Dr. Yvonne Capehart. The outing, which launched Jan. 23 in Seattle, was originally scheduled to hit 31 cities through mid-March.
Michelle Shocked is marking this year's Mardi Gras celebration in New Orleans by releasing a free digital single titled "Hardcore Hornography." The song features New Orleans artists Troy Andrews (trumpet) and Trombone Shorty, as well as the NewBirth Brass Band.
Shocked is releasing the song to "remind everyone that New Orleans and other parts of the Gulf Coast are still recovering from a b---j-- they will never forget," according to a press release.
The cut will be available beginning Feb. 13 at Shocked's website, as well as at her MySpace page.
The life of late R&B legend Barry White is the focus of a forthcoming DVD titled "Let the Music Play: The Barry White Story." Scheduled for release Feb. 20, the 72-minute documentary is the "first family-authorized look" at White, and includes interviews with White, his ex-wife, his children, his colleagues (including Smokey Robinson, Ray Parker, Jr., Nathan East and Taboo of Black Eyed Peas), as well as musical selections, according to a press release.
White died in July of 2003. He was 58.
