Patti Smith to follow Hall of Fame entrance with 'Twelve'

Punk-rock poet Patti Smith will play a few shows in February before her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as she gears up for the April release of her latest album, "Twelve."

The singer's performing schedule currently includes only a handful of shows, kicking off with a Feb. 22 appearance in Providence, RI.

On March 12, Smith will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame along with Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five, R.E.M., The Ronettes and Van Halen. In a press release, Smith called her induction a "great honor."

"Twelve," Smith's first collection of new studio recordings since 2004's "Trampin'," is due in stores April 17. The disc features 12 cover versions of famous rock songs and overlooked treasures, including new takes on "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" (originally by Tears For Fears) and Neil Young's "Helpless."

Smith and her band--Lenny Kaye (guitar), Jay Dee Daugherty (drums) and Tony Shanahan (bass, keyboards)--interpret a wide variety of other rock artists on the album, including Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, The Doors, Nirvana, Jefferson Airplane, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Allman Brothers Band and Paul Simon.

The singer and her band are joined by a number of guest artists on the disc, including Italian cellist Giovanni Sollima; playwright Sam Shepard (with whom Smith collaborated on "Cowboy Mouth" in 1971) on banjo; early '60s Greenwich Village folk artists John Cohen (banjo) and Peter Stampfel (fiddle); Red Hot Chili Peppers' bassist Flea; Television guitarist Tom Verlaine; The Black Crowes' Rich Robinson on slide guitar and dulcimer; and hip-hop producer Luis Resto (Eminem) on keyboards.

Patti's son, Jackson, and daughter, Jesse, contribute guitar and vocal work, respectively, to the recording.
