Smashing Pumpkins back this summer with album, dates
In a break from the standard record-industry practice of issuing new releases on Tuesday's, the Pumpkins' release date will fall on a Saturday (7/7/07).
The alt-rock band announced plans for its forthcoming album via a message sent to "friends" on its MySpace page. So far, the Pumpkins are set to play Germany's Rock am Ring and Rock im Park June 2-3, respectively; Austria's Nova Rock Festival June 15; and Switzerland's Greenfield Festival June 17.
In a blog entry on the Pumpkins' MySpace page, frontman Billy Corgan also makes mention of plans for a world tour this year.
At the moment, the only original Smashing Pumpkins confirmed for the reunion are Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin.
The Pumpkins were one of the most commercially successful bands of the '90s, with 18.3 million records sold in the US, according to the Recording Industry Association of America. The bandmates announced their breakup in May 2000 and played their final show that December at Chicago's Metro, where they got their start in 1988.
In a 2004 message posted at his website, Corgan blamed the band's demise on guitarist James Iha, adding that D'arcy Wretzky was fired for being a "mean-spirited drug addict who refused to get help."
After the Pumpkins, Corgan went on to form the group Zwan with Chamberlin, but pulled the plug on that project after one album, 2003's "Mary Star of the Sea." Corgan then put out his first solo album, "TheFutureEmbrace," in June 2005 while announcing at the same time that he planned to revive the Smashing Pumpkins.
