Briefly: Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Björk, Denny Doherty, Take Action, Dave Mustaine
Lost Highway Records has announced a March 20 release date for "Last of the Breed," a two-disc, 22-song collection from country legends Willie Nelson , Merle Haggard and Ray Price.
The set features newly recorded versions of country classics including Harlan Howard's "Heartaches by the Number" (with Vince Gill on backing vocals), Cindy Walker's "Night Watch", Mickey Newbury's "Sweet Memories" and Kris Kristofferson's "Why Me Lord," featuring Kristofferson singing backing vocals.
Nelson, Haggard and Price plan to support the disc with a tour that launches in March and will include stops in New York, Nashville, Las Vegas, Detroit and Colorado Springs. Asleep at the Wheel will serve as the trio's backing band.
Icelandic songstress Björk is eying a late-spring release for her first new album since 2004's "Medulla," and plans to hit the road.
The as-yet-untitled set--for which a specific release date has not been announced--features collaborations with Timbaland, who helped lay down beats for a pair of tracks, and Antony Hegerty, who duets with Björk on two songs, among others, according to Bjork 's website.
"... more work is being done in the next few weeks on the record," reads a message posted at the site Thursday (1/18). "... Björk will be going on the road and giving us long wanted concert recitals. Yes gigging again."
Denny Doherty , one quarter of '60s folk-rock act The Mamas and Papas, died today (1/19) in Mississauga, Ontario, according to the Toronto Star. He was 66.
The Mamas and Papas are best known for their hits "California Dreamin'" and "Monday, Monday."
"Take Action! Volume 6," the latest installment in Hopeless/Sub City Records' "Take Action!" series, is due in stores Feb. 6. The set, which will feature 45 tracks on two CDs and 18 videos on DVD, will retail for $7.98, according to a press release. A complete track listing is posted at Hopeless' website.
The new set's release coincides with the early February launch of this year's "Take Action!" tour, which features headliners Red Jumpsuit Apparatus.
Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine was on hand today (1/19) at the annual N.A.M.M. (National Association of Music Merchants) convention in Anaheim, CA, where he and Dean Guitars unveiled a new signature-series guitar line dubbed "Vehement: VMNT," according to a press release. The initial model--a "signature Mustaine V with a heavily flamed top, Dave Mustaine custom Live Wire pickups, ebony fingerboard and gold hardware"--will be limited to a worldwide run of only 150 copies.
