Grateful Dead, The Doors lead Grammy honor roll

The Grateful Dead and The Doors head a list of influential musical legends to be honored with The Recording Academy's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.

Others receiving the honor are Joan Baez , Booker T. & The MG's, Maria Callas, Ornette Coleman and Bob Wills . The awards will be formally presented during the 49th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony Feb. 11 in Los Angeles, which will air live on CBS-TV.

"This year's group of accomplished honorees are as diverse as they are influential as creators of the most renowned and prominent recordings in the world," said Recording Academy President Neil Portnow in a press release. "Their contributions exemplify the highest artistic and technical standards that have positively affected the music industry and music fans."

The Lifetime Achievement Award honors "lifelong artistic contributions to the recording medium," according to a press release put out by the Recording Academy. Other ceremonial nods will go to Estelle Axton, Cosimo Matassa and Stephen Sondheim, all of whom will receive the Adcademy's Trustee Award, which "recognizes outstanding contributions to the industry in a non-performing capacity."

Additionally, David M. Smith and Yamaha Corporation will receive honorary Technical Grammy Awards, which is "presented to individuals and companies who have made contributions of outstanding technical significance to the recording field."

According to a press release, the ceremonial awards are decided by a vote of the Recording Academy's Board of Trustees.
