Jeff Tweedy hits the road solo
While Grammy-winning alt-rockers Wilco take a break from the road, band frontman Jeff Tweedy will go it alone, playing solo dates in the Southeast beginning Jan. 16 in Memphis.
Current bookings will take Tweedy through the end of January, and more dates are expected to be added to the itinerary, which is listed below. New shows will be posted at Wilco's website shortly.
Tweedy's latest solo work, released in October, is a live DVD that includes performances and conversations gathered over five nights on his February 2006 solo acoustic outing. "Sunken Treasure: Live in the Pacific Northwest" also contains audio downloads for all of the songs, which include solo versions of tunes from Wilco; Tweedy's former band, Uncle Tupelo; and his side-project band Loose Fur.
The DVD track "The Thanks I Get" is currently streaming at Wilco's MySpace page.
While addressing some of the offhand comments he makes during live shows captured on the DVD, Tweedy told Rolling Stone, "I just wish I shut up more. ... Anytime I open my mouth and I'm not singing, I just want to crawl into a f---ing electrical outlet."
Of course, fans--and many critics--are tickled by his interaction with the audience.
Tweedy also told Rolling Stone that fans can expect a new Wilco album by next April.
"We have twelve songs tracked," he said. "I'm really excited. If there's a theme running through the album, it's the theme of hope."
Wilco's latest studio album, 2004's "A Ghost Is Born," earned the rockers two Grammys. They followed it with a two-disc live record, "Kicking Television: Live in Chicago," in November 2005.
