Rosanne Cash steers 'Cadillac' into new year

Singer/songwriter Rosanne Cash will keep busy through the first half of the new year with an assortment of concert dates backing her most recent album, "Black Cadillac."

Cash, whose next show takes place Dec. 7 in Lexington, KY, will also travel Down Under to participate in the Australian Sydney Festival in early January, where "Mariners and Musicians," filmmaker Steve Lippman's short film and companion piece to "Black Cadillac," will be shown as part of the festival's film series.

More information on Cash's antipodean adventures can be found at her website.

"Black Cadillac," which hit stores in January, explores themes of grief and acceptance, a process Cash has become familiar with in her personal life, losing her father (Johnny Cash), mother (Johnny Cash's first wife, Vivian Liberto) and step-mother (June Carter Cash) during the past two years.

The album's title track was written six weeks before June Carter's death, at a point no one knew she was even ill, according to Cash in her online bio, who calls the song "foreboding."

"I've always found that songs can be postcards from your future," she said. "I felt that I had to fit everything else around that song. That was the theme."

The album was co-produced by her husband, John Leventhal (Shawn Colvin, David Crosby), with Bill Bottrell (Sheryl Crow, Shelby Lynne).

"I'm still getting perspective on it," she said of the recent deaths in her family and the making of the new album. "I feel a little exhausted, and I still feel so many of the emotions that are in those songs. Some of them will never go away."

Cash also recently contributed a cover of "Lovin' Him Was Easier (Than Anything I'll Ever Do Again)" to "The Pilgrim," a Kris Kristofferson tribute compilation. The 18-track set also features Kristofferson takes by Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, Rodney Crowell and others.
