Top Artists Lined Up For Weekend "Concert Of The Century"
Eric Clapton , Garth Brooks , Sheryl Crow , John Fogerty , Gloria Estefan , B.B. King, Lenny Kravitz, John Mellencamp, 'N Sync, and Susan Tedeschi are among the artists scheduled to take the stage Saturday (10/23) in Washington D.C. for "The Concert of the Century For VH1 Save The Music." Save The Music is a charity that supports the development and restoration of public school music programs.
President Clinton and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton also will participate in the two-hour event.
''It was Mrs. Clinton's idea to put together this concert to ring out the century by bringing together the biggest artists to play some of the greatest songs of the last 100 years,'' VH1 president John Sykes said in a statement.
The location of the invitation-only concert is not being publicized due to security issues, according to VH1. According to Billboard, the event will take place in a venue with a capacity of less than 1,000, and it is expected that about half of the people invited will be members of the White House staff.
Artists are expected to perform their own hits as well as renditions of songs recorded throughout the century. Paul Shaffer will be the musical director and will lead the CBS ''Late Show'' band at the event.
The October 23 event will air live on VH1 beginning at 4 p.m. ET. The vh1.com website plans to cover the event with 360-degree IPIX photos, backstage reports and commentary.
