Tour launches Jackie Greene's Skinny Singers project

Singer/songwriter Jackie Greene , fresh off a lengthy tour hyping his latest studio album, "American Myth," is set to return to the road with his new project, Skinny Singers .

A collaboration with fellow singer/songwriter Tim Bluhm (of rock act Mother Hips ), Skinny Singers will make their performing debut as a duo Nov. 29 in Santa Barbara, CA, the first of eight shows the pair will tackle before the end of the year.

According to Greene's website, the idea for the project came together during one of Greene's recent solo shows, when Bluhm joined him on stage for a few songs.

"We did a strange show together awhile back where we decided it would be fun to take Mother Hips songs and Jackie songs and sort of perform them differently," Greene said. "Different arrangements, instruments, et cetera. We went a little overboard at that show, filling the stage with every instrument we owned ... but it was damn fun.

"So the idea behind Skinny Singers is relatively the same ... but expect some surprises. We've written some new songs just for this tour and will be performing them along with others you may recognize."

The duo is currently streaming several cuts on their MySpace site.

Released in March, "American Myth" is Greene's first recording for his new label, Verve Forecast. The singer released two albums of original material for Dig Records: his 2002 debut, "Gone Wanderin'," as well as "Rusty Nails," a 2003 release that included material from earlier in his career.

Greene's lineup of studio musicians for "American Myth" included drummer Pete Thomas and bassist Pete Faragher, both members of Elvis Costello's longtime backing group, The Imposters. Steve Berlin of Los Lobos produced, and also appears on, the record.

Dig Music owner Marty DeAnda discovered Greene during an open-mic performance in Sacramento, CA, in the early part of the decade and signed him to a contract, also becoming Greene's manager in the process.
