Briefly: Eagles, Beastie Boys, Foxy Brown, Eleni Mandell
The Eagles and Wal-Mart Stores announced they've entered "long-term strategic marketing agreement that will encompass sponsorship, exclusive audio and video releases, and product visibility," according to a statement issued by the big-box retailer.
The band was attracted to Wal-Mart because of the environmental goals the company has outlined--"to be supplied 100 percent by renewable energy; to create zero waste; and to sell products that sustain the earth's resources and environment," according to the press release.
Specifics about the agreement with The Eagles will be revealed "shortly," the company said.
"Our partnership with the Eagles demonstrates how serious we are about giving our customers a choice of new, unique, world-class entertainment products," Wal-Mart exec David Porter said in a statement. "We are very pleased to be able to bring our customers an alliance with America's greatest rock icons."
Veteran rap act the Beastie Boys , who have rarely performed live in recent years, will play a concert tonight (10/24) at the Henry Fonda Theater in Los Angeles.
Rapper Foxy Brown, whose real name is Inga Marchand, reportedly has been sentenced to three years probation in connection with a 2004 fight with two nail-salon employees in New York City.
She pleaded guilty in August to kicking one of the workers and hitting a second in the face following a dispute about payment, according to the Associated Press.
Singer/songwriter Eleni Mandell is set to issue her sixth album, "Miracle of Five," on Feb. 6. It follows 2004's "Afternoon," which earned her "Best Local Singer" honors from Los Angeles magazine.
Among the musicians who contributed to the new set were Wilco lead guitarist Nels Cline, X drummer DJ Bonebrake (who plays vibes) and reed player Jeff Turmes, along with Mandell's longtime rhythm section of drummer Kevin Fitzgerald and bassist Ryan Feves. Andy Kaulkin produced the album, and also played keyboards.
