Tom Petty rides 'Highway' during fall tour

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers have plugged some new dates into the itinerary for the soon-to-launch third leg of their ongoing tour behind Petty's recently released solo set, "Highway Companion."

Since last check, Petty and company have penciled in September stops in Toronto and Madison, WI, as well as several October dates on the West Coast, including the tour's third engagement at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA. Meanwhile, a previously announced Sept. 19 stop in Raleigh, NC, has been bumped up to Sept. 10, and will feature an opening performance from The Black Crowes instead of originally announced openers The Strokes.

The Strokes, however, will turn up at a handful of subsequent shows as they rotate through an opening slot that will also feature the Blind Boys of Alabama, The Dandy Warhols, Beck, Frank Black and John Mayer. Details are included in the itinerary shown below.

On Sept. 21, Petty and The Heartbreakers will play a show in their hometown of Gainesville, FL. The concert--tickets for which sold out in minutes, according to the group's publicist--will be filmed. Specific plans for the footage haven't been revealed.

Released in late July, "Highway Companion"--Petty's third solo set and 18th overall career album--debuted at No. 4 on The Billboard 200 chart, marking the singer/songwriter's highest-ever chart debut. The disc, which features the single "Saving Grace," was produced by Jeff Lynn, with Petty and Heartbreakers' guitarist Mike Campbell assisting.

This year, Petty and The Heartbreakers celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of their self-titled debut. To mark the occasion, the band has tapped Academy Award-winning director/screenwriter Peter Bogdanovich to direct a "comprehensive feature/film documentary" about the group, according to a press release.

Over the past 30 years, Petty and The Heartbreakers have sold more than 50-million records and have been nominated for 16 Grammy Awards. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, which was the first year it was eligible for that honor.

As previously reported, Petty told Rolling Stone earlier this year that his current tour may be his last.

"I think we should do this tour and then put an end to doing national tours, and just play now and then where we want to play," Petty is quoted as saying. "The idea of doing sheds or arenas ... you turn into an animal by the time it's done."

In addition to his full-time gig as a musician, Petty also hosts an XM Satellite Radio show dubbed "Tom Petty's Hidden Treasures," which recently began its second season.
