R.E.M. reunites with Berry for one-off show

R.E.M. members Michael Stipe, Peter Buck and Mike Mills will reunite with longtime drummer Bill Berry for a performance set to take place during the group's induction into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame next week.

"It should be a fun and eventful night, given the other nominees and the chance to see the original Berry Buck Mills and Stipe back in action," the group's manager, Bertis Downs, said in a messaged posted today (9/5) at the band's website. Downs went on to say that the foursome is "considering recording something for a yet-to-be-announced charitable project (too early to mention but stay tuned for details as they develop)."

In addition to the potential charity project, Stipe, Buck and Mills are "ready to start the process of decisions relating to the next record, which they expect to start working on in earnest before too long," Downs wrote.

R.E.M.'s Sept. 16 Georgia rock hall performance will mark only the fourth time that Berry has played with his former bandmates since he quit the group in 1997. The first came during a 2003 concert in Raleigh, NC, during which he sang backing vocals on "Radio Free Europe" and then manned the drums for "Permanent Vacation." He also took the stage with the group at the October 2005 wedding of longtime R.E.M. guitar tech Dewitt Burton, and again earlier this year during an April 2006 concert by Buck's side project The Minus 5.

Next Tuesday (9/12), R.E.M. offers up "And I Feel Fine ... The Best of the I.R.S. Years 1982-1987." The compilation--which, as its name explains, features material from the bands stint at I.R.S. Records--will be available in two versions: a single-disc set that houses 21 cuts spanning from 1982's "Chronic Town" EP to 1987's "Document," and a special edition that will include a bonus CD featuring rarities, unreleased songs, alternate mixes and more.

A companion DVD titled "When the Light is Mine ... The Best of the I.R.S. Years 1982-1987 Video Collection" is due out the same day.
