Tim McGraw, Faith Hill play surprise club gig

After wrapping up their sold-out "Soul2Soul II" co-headlining concert at Staples Center in Los Angeles on Friday night (8/18), husband/wife country stars Tim McGraw and Faith Hill headed to nearby West Hollywood, CA, to play a show at famed club the Whisky a Go Go.

According to a press release, the "Bread & Water" show--as McGraw calls his occasional, loose-knit club gigs--kicked off before a standing-room-only crowd at 12:30 a.m., with McGraw picking up his guitar and playing solo covers of some country classics as his band and crew were setting up.

Songs McGraw and his band later played included the new tune "The River and Me," as well as covers of Tom Petty's "Breakdown," Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" and the Elvis Presley hit "Suspicious Minds."

Hill later performed Aretha Franklin's "Think" and Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water," and was joined by Reba McEntire for the Everly Brothers' "When Will I Be Loved" and the McEntire favorite "Does He Love You." Both McGraw and Hill's backing band's appeared, along with noted Hollywood guitarist Walter Parks.

Though McGraw had regularly staged "Bread & Water" shows in the past, the West Hollywood gig--proceeds from which will benefit the Neighbor's Keeper Foundation for Hurricane Katrina-related efforts--marked his first such show in three years.

McGraw's occasional "Bread & Water" shows, which are announced in local media and on the Internet on the morning of the event, allow him and his group to play whatever material they choose. Setlists typically turn out to be dominated by '70s and '80s cover songs and country classics.

Prior to their Staples Center performance, McGraw and Hill surprised fan Christine Nevins--holder of the 1 millionth ticket sold to the "Soul2Soul II" tour--and her husband with a meet-and-greet. During their meeting, the fans were presented with a new Dodge Charger equipped with an XM Satellite Radio, courtesy of Southern California's Huntington Beach Dodge.

The "Soul2Soul II" tour resumes Friday night (8/25) in Phoenix.
