Briefly: Jay-Z, DMX, Aimee Mann, Travis Barker
Rapper Jay-Z , MTV President Christina Norman and United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan held a press conference Wednesday (8/9) to unveil an initiative to spotlight the need for safe drinking water in parts of the world where it's lacking.
Jay-Z, who embarks on an international tour next month, will be followed by an MTV crew as he travels to several regions affected by the water crisis. An MTV special based on his travels, "Diary of Jay-Z: Water for Life," is scheduled to debut Nov. 24.
"Most of us take water for granted. We turn on the tap and there's plenty of it or, if we prefer, we can buy hundreds of different brands in the supermarket," Annan said in a press release. "But for more than a billion people who lack access to safe drinking water, this is an inconceivable dream."
Said Jay-Z: "I'm not going to go there and rap to them, I want to touch and maybe help, to see what I can do in these areas. I'm very excited to go out, not only to be a rock star in these countries, but also to help, and also, to visit places where we can see the effects of our contributions."
The 22nd edition of the hits compilation "NOW That's What I Call Music!" again finds itself atop The Billboard 200 album chart, up from the No. 2 slot a week ago. It's the album's third non-consecutive week at No. 1.
Rapper DMX 's "Year of the Dog ... Again" claims the No. 2 slot in its debut week, ending a streak of five No. 1 debuts for the artist.
Debuting at No. 3 is "Kidz Bop 10," which features children singing songs including Daniel Powter's "Bad Day."
Stone Sour 's "Come What(ever) May" debuts at No. 4, while Destiny's Child alumnus LeToya's self-titled album falls from No. 1 to No. 5.
Aimee Mann plans to release a holiday album dubbed "One More Drifter in the Snow" on Halloween, via her Super Ego label.
Among the songs Mann covered for the set are "I'll Be Home for Christmas," "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" (featuring narration by Grant-Lee Phillips), "Winter Wonderland" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas."
Additional tracks include the original "Calling on Mary" (penned by Mann and producer Paul Bryan) and "Christmastime," which was written by Mann's husband, Michael Penn.
People Magazine reports that former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and his Playboy Playmate wife Shanna Moakler will divorce after two years of marriage.
The couple was the focus of the MTV reality show "Meet the Barkers."
