Barry Manilow delays shows due to hip surgery

Veteran singer/songwriter Barry Manilow , whose residency at the Las Vegas Hilton recently was extended, will have to push back some upcoming shows at the casino in order to undergo surgery on both of his hips.

According to a press release from Manilow's camp, the singer recently tore the cartilage in both hips, and was experiencing "extreme pain and discomfort." An MRI apparently revealed labrum tears, which doctors plan to repair during an outpatient arthroscopic procedure at an undisclosed Southern California hospital.

"Manilow's stage performance is well known for its extensive production and high energy that have aggravated the condition," reads the press release, which goes on to say that, according to Manilow's doctors, "labrum tears are quite common among pro athletes playing aggressive sports. UCLA's Josh Shipp and the LA Kings' Aaron Miller recently had similar surgery."

Manilow plans to continue performing at the Hilton as scheduled through Aug. 19, after which the show will go on hiatus until Nov. 8. Hilton executives will reschedule approximately 20 concerts for next year, according to the press release.

Before undergoing surgery, Manilow plans to make an Aug. 27 appearance at the Emmy Awards, for which he is nominated in the Best Performance in a Variety or Music Program category for his PBS special "Music and Passion."

"I'm anxious to make it through the Emmy Awards and then right to the hospital," Manilow said in a statement. "The doctors have promised me that I'll come back even better than before. And I can't wait to hit the stage again."

The singer's recovery and rehabilitation are expected to take approximately eight weeks, and he is scheduled to return to the stage Oct. 14 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City for a one-off concert that will help launch his forthcoming album, "The Greatest Songs of the Sixties." Scheduled for an Oct. 31 release, the disc--which follows his No. 1 set "The Greatest Songs of the Fifties"--features his takes on 13 classics, including The Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling," Herb Alpert's "This Guy's in Love With You," The Beatles' "And I Love Her, Frank Sinatra's "Strangers in the Night and Dean Martin's "Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime."

Manilow launched his "Music and Passion" show at the Las Vegas Hilton in early 2005, and initially signed on to appear through 2006. In March, he signed an extension that will keep him at the venue through 2008.
