Eight People Stabbed At R. Kelly Concert
Miami police swarmed the Miami Arena on Tuesday (6/29) after a fight left eight people stabbed during an R. Kelly concert. The injured were treated at nearby Jackson Memorial Hospital, according to the Miami Herald, where at least one person remains in serious condition.
Initial witness accounts indicate that the brawl began when a concert patron became jealous when another man began talking to his date. Miami Police detective Norbert Bondarenko told the Herald on Wednesday that the fight quickly grew to involve 40 to 50 people and ended quickly.
Many of those stabbed did not realize they were injured at first, according to police reports.
Arena officials concede that the knife, which was recovered, somehow got past both a pat-down and hand-held metal detectors at the building's entrances. A report that a suspect had been taken into custody could not be confirmed at press time.
At the height of the confusion, ten police units and several off-duty officers were dispatched to the venue.
The Miami show was one of the later stops on a tour dogged by artist defections and show cancellations. Busta Rhymes announced his departure before the tour even started, and the tour was extensively re-routed to pull out of shows where ticket sales were particularly soft.
In May, another wave of date changes and cancellation took place, and Foxy Brown, and Deborah Cox vacated the lineup. Tuesday's show featured Eve, the Ruff Ryders and Kelly Price in addition to headliner Kelly.
