Squirrel Nut Zippers Are Back On The Road And In The Studio

After taking nearly a year to regroup after the departure of two members, retro-swingers Squirrel Nut Zippers will return to the road later this month. The band has added three new musicians and is halfway through the recording of its fourth album, according to a press release from Mammoth Records.

The band's revamped line-up includes new members Tim Smith (saxophone), David Wright (trombone) and Reese Gray (piano). They join bandleader Jimbo Mathus (vocals, guitar), Katherine Whalen (vocals, banjo), Stu Cole (bass), Chris Phillips (drums) and Je Widenhouse (trumpet).

Earlier this year, Tom Maxwell (vocals, guitar, baritone sax) and Ken Mosher (guitar, baritone and alto sax, vocals) left the group.

The band's itinerary includes a New Year's Eve performance at Seattle's Last Call Millennium Ball. Chris Isaak and The Robert Cray Band are among the other acts on the bill.

Squirrel Nut Zippers is also scheduled to perform music from their 1998 ''Christmas Caravan'' album during a Dec. 8 performance on ''Live with Regis & Kathie Lee.''

Mammoth Records plans to release the new album in August. Several band members worked on side projects during Squirrel Nut Zippers' hiatus.
