Flaming Lips, Wu-Tang, others join Voodoo lineup
The Flaming Lips , Wu-Tang Clan , My Chemical Romance and Social Distortion are the latest additions to the roster for the eighth annual Voodoo Music Experience , which returns to New Orleans' City Park this fall.
Other acts who have signed on for the gig include previously announced headliners The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Duran Duran, as well as Kings of Leon, Ozomatli, Secret Machines, Blue October, Brazilian Girls, Ferry Corsten, Broken Social Scene, Drive-By Truckers, Jack's Mannequin, Yerba Buena and The Rentals.
Organizers will continue to add acts in the coming months, including "a special Louisiana element featuring and honoring the music of the region," according to a press release.
Set to take place on Halloween weekend (Oct. 28-29), this year's event marks the Voodoo Music Experience festival's return to New Orleans' City Park after being displaced last year due to Hurricane Katrina. The full-scale 2005 festival was moved to Memphis, though a scaled-down version took place at New Orleans' Audobon Park, and was the first large-scale event to take place in the city following Katrina, according to a press release.
"Last year, I personally experienced, along with the crowd, the tremendous lifting of spirits as Voodoo celebrated the return of live music to our devastated but unbroken city just two months to the day after Katrina," New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin said in a statement. "It took a miraculous effort to pull together the event considering what the city had just gone through ... but it was exactly what we needed and I welcome the return of one of New Orleans' signature musical events."
New Orleans is still awaiting funding to restore the 150-year-old City Park to its pre-hurricane state; Voodoo Music Experience organizers plan to donate a portion of the proceeds from ticket sales for this year's festival to City Park and the surrounding neighborhoods, according to a press release.
