Smashing Pumpkins File Lawsuit Against Former Manager

February 22, 2000 05:03 PM
Smashing Pumpkins have filed a lawsuit against their former manager Sharon Osbourne and her company, claiming, among other things, that she refused to return a $150,000 advance paid to her by the group. Osbourne brashly and publicly tendered her resignation in January after just three months on the job.

The suit also alleges that Osbourne's resignation--which came as the band was embarking on a European promotional tour and just weeks before a new album was scheduled to be released--was a calculated attempt to damage the band ''both emotionally and professionally.''

(Osbourne, the wife of rocker Ozzy, parted ways with Smashing Pumpkins by issuing a press release that said she was resigning ''due to medical reasons--[frontman] Billy Corgan was making me sick!!!'')

The suit--which accuses Osbourne of breach of contract, fraud, breach of fiduciary duty, and conversion--also alleges that Osbourne convinced the band's tour manager to quit.

The suit, filed in Los Angeles Tuesday (2/22) in California Superior Court, seeks the $150,000 the band claims it is owed, as well as damages to be awarded at trial.
