David Lee Roth returns to the stage
After recently getting bounced from what was to be a years-long gig as the morning-radio replacement for Howard Stern, rocker David Lee Roth is bypassing the unemployment line in favor of a summer tour.
So far, Roth has mapped a route through 20 US cities for a run that kicks off June 28 in Chicago and is scheduled to stretch at least into late August. Venues have not yet been confirmed, with the exception of the Chicago show, which will take place at House of Blues. Details are included below.
In January, Roth took over the syndicated morning slot that Stern vacated when he jumped to SIRIUS satellite radio. Broadcasting from Stern's old studio at CBS Radio's WXRK-FM in New York City, the former Van Halen frontman was lambasted by critics from the moment he hit the air.
In April, with its ratings taking a nosedive at the six stations airing Roth's show, CBS cut ties with the singer-turned-DJ, who was displeased with his ouster.
"It's official: today is my last day," Roth told listeners on April 21. "I was booted, tossed and it's going to cost somebody." Roth reportedly had signed a $4 million contract with CBS.
With his radio career seemingly behind him, Roth will get back to performing classic Van Halen cuts for his fans; in recent years, the singer's set list has consisted almost entirely of material from the six albums he released with the band between 1978 and 1984.
Roth's most recent album of original solo material is 1998's "DLR Band." A covers-heavy collection titled "Diamond Dave"--Roth's nickname--followed in 2003.
Earlier this week, Roth told Billboard that he sees a reunion with Van Halen "as an inevitability." The singer has made the same claim a number of times over the 10 years that have passed since he briefly returned to the fold to record two new Van Halen songs for a 1996 best-of set.
In 2004, Van Halen mounted a reunion tour with its other former singer, Sammy Hagar , who replaced Roth in 1985. Hagar and guitarist Eddie Van Halen were again on the outs by the time that trek ended.
