Jazz great Wayne Shorter was just shy of 30 years old when he was named Second Best Composer--one spot behind Duke Ellington--by a Downbeat Magazine poll in 1962.
Two years later, Miles Davis invited the saxophonist to tour with him; it was the beginning of a 6-year stint with likes of Ron Carter, the late Tony Williams , and Herbie Hancock . More than three decades later, in 1997, Shorter reunited with Hancock and released the duet "1+1," and the pair spent two years touring together.
All in all, the National Endowments for the Arts American Jazz Master has won a total of nine Grammy Awards and has been nominated for 13. Celebrating his 75th year, Shorter is preparing to embark on a European tour in March, but for now he has a couple of shows closer to home: on Friday (12/5) in Toronto, and next Wednesday (12/10) in Los Angeles.
LiveDaily contributing photographer Peter Keeling attended Shorter's 75th Birthday Celebration at Boston's Berklee Performance Center last night (12/3), and here are some of the photos he took.
