In his journal, Kurt Cobain named "Butthole Surfers " as one of his Top 10 albums of all time. The Texas band's self-titled debut was released in 1983 on Alternative Tentacles Records, after the group was discovered by the label's head honcho, ex-Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra.
In 2008, the name Butthole Surfers comes across as more clever than controversial, but it proved to be an issue for mainstream radio and TV announcers 20 years ago, who often referred to the band as the "B.H. Surfers." Ironically, legend has it that the group started out by using different names at every show until a radio announcer misspoke, using the title of one of their songs as the band's name.
After years of waiting, the band's cult following is finally getting a few rare chances to see them--still featuring Gibby Haynes, Paul Leary, and King Coffey--live in concert. Four more shows are planned for this month: headlining dates in Dallas (10/22), Houston (10/23) and New Orleans (10/24), as well as another New Orleans gig at the Voodoo Music Festival (10/26).
LiveDaily's Tim Mosenfelder attended the band's reunion show in their home town, Austin, TX, last Saturday (9/27) and took photos of the show.
