NWA Rock Doc set for October broadcast
A new VH1 Rock Doc, "NWA: The World's Most Dangerous Group," will premier on the cable channel Oct. 3.
The 90-minute documentary--which takes a look back at the group's 1988 album "Straight Outta Compton" and at NWA's influence on hip-hop and rap music--features new interviews with original NWA members Ice Cube and DJ Yella. It also includes interviews with Eazy-E's widow Tomica Woods-Wright, former NWA manager Jerry Heller, Ice-T and director John Singleton, among others.
The new interviews are supplemented by rare footage and interviews from NWA's early days, photos and music. The documentary also chronicles the birth of "gangsta rap" while telling the story of a group of childhood friends from Compton who emerged from the ghetto and channeled the rage of the streets through rap music and pop culture, according to a press release.
"Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, MC Ren and DJ Yella gave a powerful voice to the late-80's Compton ghetto that was on the verge of exploding and in the process scared much of White America," according to a VH1 statement. "Often misunderstood, NWA's raging raps about police violence, gangland terror and drug-fueled shooting sprees gave the ultimate voice to the voiceless."
To commemorate the ongoing musical and cultural influence of NWA, Capitol/Priority will on Sept 30 release a new CD, "NWA and their Family Tree," which features a cross-section of 18 genre-defining tracks by NWA and its founders. The disc also will include songs by NWA-inspired artists Snoop Dogg, Mack 10 and Westside Connection, among others.
