Billy Joe Shaver indicted for 2007 shooting

Billy Joe Shaver was indicted on felony charges Wednesday (9/17) for allegedly shooting a man in April 2007 at a Lorena, TX, bar.
The 69-year-old country singer has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and unlawful carrying of a handgun, according to the Associated Press.

At the time of the shooting, an attorney for Shaver reportedly said the alleged victim, Billy B. Coker, was drunk, aggressive, had a knife and followed Shaver outside.

One witness said Shaver followed Coker out of Papa Joe's Texas Saloon and asked, "Where do you want it?" before shooting him in the face, according to an arrest warrant affidavit filed last year.

Austin singer-songwriter Dale Watson, who is a friend of Shaver's, wrote a song about the incident titled, "Where Do You Want It?" However, when Watson performs the song, he reportedly prefaces it by noting that Shaver denies using the phrase.

Shaver had not turned himself in as of Wednesday (9/17) night, according to an official at the McLennan Country Jail in Waco.
At press time, a Texas newspaper reported that Shaver was still scheduled to headline a free concert in downtown Greenville tonight (9/19).
