Barbra Streisand, The Who, George Jones to receive Kennedy Center honors

Barbra Streisand , George Jones , Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey will be among the 2008 honorees at "The 31st Annual Kennedy Center Honors," to be broadcast in December on the CBS television network, according to a press release.

Morgan Freeman and choreographer Twyla Tharp also will be among the honors recipients, who are recognized for their lifetime contributions to American culture through the performing arts--whether in dance, music, theater, opera, motion pictures or television.

The honorees will be received by President and Mrs. Bush at the White House prior to the gala performance taping on Dec. 7. They also will be seated with the Bushes during the celebration at the Kennedy Center Opera House.

The 2008 honorees will be saluted with performances and tributes in what the network is calling a "star-studded" celebration. However, details regarding guest performers were not available.

In addition to recognizing artists, the Kennedy Center Honors program supports performing arts initiatives, education and public service programming, and national outreach efforts.
