Featured Photos: Lollapalooza Day 3, Chicago IL - August 3, 2008
In contrast to Saturday night's (8/2) overzealous Rage Against the Machine fans, Lollapalooza on Day 3 reportedly featured a more subdued crowd. Sunday's (8/3) lineup included big draws like Nine Inch Nails and Kanye West , as well as Black Kids , Girl Talk , Flogging Molly , Mark Ronson , Gnarls Barkley , Iron & Wine , Brazilian Girls and Perry Farrell with Slash, among others.
Several critics made a point of mentioning that Girl Talk, AKA Gregg Gillis, should have been on a larger stage. Indeed, he is just one guy and a DJ rig, but who knew he would invite 50 friends from the audience to join him? The result was reported to be overflowing throngs of people.
Far more mellow offerings were had at Perry Farrell's traditional Kidzapalooza set, which was kid friendly, even with a cigarette smoking Slash on guitar. Farrell and his band played versions of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" as well as "Mountain Song" and "Jane Says," with pauses in between for cryptic words of wisdom to the young attendees, according to ConsequenceofSound.net.
With the schedule pitting Nine Inch Nails and Kanye West on the opposite stages (a mile apart), most fans apparently opted for the hometown artist, leaving Trent Reznor and company with an audience of a mere 20,000. Nonetheless, NIN reportedly delivered a powerful set. The Chicago Tribune said, "A gate descends from above, like a shopping mall shoe store closing for business, placing Nine Inch Nails behind bars for a smoldering version of "Piggy (Nothing Can Stop Me Now)."
Meanwhile, at the other end of the park, Kanye treated fans to an equally dynamic show complete with a "dazzling light show," performing tracks such as "lashing Lights," "Shine" and "Homecoming," reported Billboard.com. His set was a beefy 90 minutes--sans DJ A-Trak but avec a fair share of motivational speaking.
