Over the weekend, Lollapalooza had its first sell-out since making the city its home in 2005, the Chicago Tribune reported. With ticket sales at a grand total of 225,000 over three days, it looks like the festival is officially here to stay.
With a stellar lineup already in place for Day 1, fans reportedly clamored at the gates of Grant Park on Friday (8/1), chomping at the bit to see bands such as Bloc Party , Cat Power , Rogue Wave , Gogol Bordello , The Go! Team , Mates of State , Duffy , and The Black Keys to name a few. The crowds packed themselves in like sardines despite sweltering temperatures. Pitchforkmedia.com reported that The Kills set was cut short when singer Alison "VV" Mosshart was overcome by the heat.
Even though Gogol Bordello was lucky to have a more shaded aspect, their performance was noted to have generated a few extra degrees of heat. Ever kinetic frontman Eugene Hütz, always full of surprises, apparently included some unique percussion by placing a metal bucket over his mic and hitting it with a drumstick.
Some critics panned Bloc Party's performance; the disappointment appeared to be specific to lack of volume and a truncated set. With festivals of this scale technical issues are not uncommon, and it's also worth mentioning that Bloc Party's bass player was only a stand in. Yet there appears to be no shortage of praise for Bloc Party's drummer Matt Tong from those who attended the performance.
RollingStone.com dubbed headliners Radiohead "the kings of Lollapalooza." The band's set was dominated by new material, and was reportedly was met with an enthusiastic reception from the crowd of 75,000.
