Nine Inch Nails Takes 'Ghosts' To The Visual World

Nine Inch Nails is hosting a virtual film festival, asking fans to create video pieces to accompany tracks from its new release, "Ghosts I-V," a 36 track experimental instrumental collection that was recorded over a ten week period last fall. All of the submissions will be available to view by the general public on the band's YouTube channel. Then within a couple of months, a team of people, including Reznor, will make selections of pieces they feel are exceptional to be included in the virtual film fest, according to a statement by Trent Reznor on the band's website.

This experiment in collaboration is a chance for the band to interact beyond the typical one-way artist-to-fan relationship, Reznor explained in a posting on his website.. The potential for further expansion on the project could include multiple installments of online film festivals, television broadcasts and a one-time live performance of the entire Ghosts record with the fan-submitted visuals involved. "It really depends on how this progresses and develops," Reznor said.

The first nine tracks from the album--which Reznor released independently, bypassing any major record label--can be downloaded from the band's website for free; all 36 tracks can be purchased for $5. NIN also is offering "Ghosts" in a variety of deluxe packages ranging from $10 to the $300 "ultra-deluxe limited edition," which sold out almost immediately, according to the band.

Information on how to participate in NIN's film festival are available on the band's YouTube channel.
